Meet the BDCH team

Our Hospice is incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful team of therapists, nurses, carers and administrative staff who ensure the Hospice is delivering an excellent standard of care and support to all our patients.

Nursing Team

Linda Byer

Nurse Manager

Linda is passionate about developing services at the Hospice to enable people with life-limiting illnesses to live the best life possible within the limitations of their conditions through holistic care.

Linda qualified as a nurse in 1982 and has been Nurse Manager here since 2006. She has a wealth of experience in palliative care and rehabilitation. In her spare time Linda enjoys dancing.

Tricia Cosford

Deputy Nurse Manager

Tricia joined the team in 2017 after many years’ experience in community nursing. She has a creative streak and enjoys card-making and furniture painting.

Veronica Tarrant


Veronica has been here for 10 years and loves the interaction with the patients and staff, and always tried to bring a little humour to the day. She loves entertaining and anything creative.

Debbie Smith


Debbie works part-time as a Parkinson’s Nurse in Northamptonshire and joined the Hospice in January 2019. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, friends and walking the dog with her granddaughter.

Maggie Storton


Maggie has worked at Bedford Daycare Hospice for the last 3 years as a bank nurse. Her background is in District Nursing and Discharge planning at Bedford Hospital and she has been a registered nurse for 41 years. In her spare time she belongs to 2 choirs and enjoys gardening, floristry and cross stitch.

Jayne Darrington

Healthcare Assistant

Jayne came to the Hospice as a volunteer and now works as a bank healthcare assistant. Jayne enjoys being with the patients and learning about their lives. Jayne is also secretary for the local branch of Cats Protection.

Rachel Bryce

Healthcare Assistant

Rachel came as a volunteer but now also occasionally works as a bank nurse, after retiring from the NHS. Rachel loves working with patients and staff and tries to always have a positive approach talking to people. Rachel enjoys walking and being with her children.

Jane Maxfield


Jane started counselling at the Daycare Hospice in January this year, 2019. Her background is nursing, specializing in end of life care and pre- and post-bereavement counselling, which includes children. Jane has a very old goldfish called Mrs Fish and enjoys painting.

Lorna Homer

Healthcare Assistant

Lorna joined the team in June 2019. She qualified as a nurse in 1982 and has worked in the NHS and private sector. She loves being with her family and enjoys travelling and eating out.

Administrative & hospice team

Kevan Morrison

Business Manager

Kevan has worked at the Hospice since 2016, having retired from teaching in 2010. He has experience in banking and accountancy and looks after the Hospice finances. In his spare time Kevan enjoys freemasonry and classical music.

Jinny Shoosmith

Head of Fundraising

Jinny has been at the Hospice for just over 3 years and has extensive experience in retail. She has opened 3 successful shops since being here and enjoys a challenge. In her spare time Jinny enjoys Cliff Richard concerts, food and wine and holidays in the sun.

Liz Bayes

Hospice Administrator

Liz came as a volunteer when the Hospice began and loves the place so much she has been here ever since. Liz does all the Hospice administration and coordinates our valued volunteers. She loves gardening and cooking.

Nia Haines


Nia has been helping with fundraising at the Hospice for nearly 2 years. She comes from a teaching background and really enjoys her change in direction. Nia enjoys looking after her children and dogs and loves gardening.

Linda Grahame


Linda has been cooking delicious meals at the Hospice for 20 years. Linda is a real outdoor person and loves to work in her garden or her allotment, enjoying a chilled glass of Chardonnay.

Nina Montgomery


Nina has recently joined the Hospice fundraising team. Nina enjoys travelling, swimming and reading.

Carole Lucken


Carole has worked as a chef at Bedford Daycare Hospice for just over 7 years and has really enjoyed doing her bit to try and ensure that patients go home with a smile on their faces and full stomachs! Outside of work Carole enjoys going to the theatre and eating out, as well as travelling the globe to experience different cultures and wildlife. She is also a Chelsea season ticket holder, but is still happy to serve supporters of other teams!

Helen McDonnell

Kempston Shop Manager

Helen joined the Hospice in July 2016 after working for 25 years for Begees. She is shop manager for both Kempston shops and loves working with her volunteers who are invaluable. Helen enjoys a glass of red wine in the evening having worked a long day.


Biggleswade Shop Manager

Marlene Priest

London Road Shop Manager

Marlene has been the manager of London Road since it opened in Nov 2018. Before that she was deputy manager in Biggleswade and has run several bridal shops. Marlene enjoys a gin and tonic and spending time with her family.

Volunteer therapists

Liz Watson

Massage Therapist

Having retired from a successful career in nursing, Liz decided to continue caring for people and retrained as a massage therapist. When Liz is not treating patients, she enjoys spending time gardening and helping look after her grandchildren.

Tom Rigby

Holistic Therapist

Tom has been volunteering at the Hospice for just over a year and started volunteering because he felt he wanted to use his skills to help people suffering with a life-limiting illness. He loves chatting to patients and hopes to brighten each patients day with therapy, yoga or chat!

Sue Fleming

Massage Therapist

Sue is married to Mike and has just celebrated her Diamond Wedding Anniversary, a very happy occasion with all her family. In 2016 when she completed the whole process of breast surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy she joined the 12 week education program on Tuesdays at Bedford Day Care Hospice. She was so impressed with her care that when she felt 100% recovered in early 2017 she thought about her love of aromatherapy and her training in Indian head massage and asked if she could come back as a volunteer therapist. She now part of the team of therapists and thoroughly enjoys meeting and helping some of the people who have been on the same or similar journey to herself. She can’t speak highly enough of the staff and all the work they do.

Reiki Massage Therapist

Anne Green

Reiki Massage Therapist

Anne is an Holistic Therapist who has been volunteering at the Hospice since April 2018. She provides Reiki therapy for the Friday patients and loves to see how soothing and relaxing they find it. Anne has another connection to the hospice, which was her boarding school house during the 1980’s, so she feels a special bond to the building as well as it’s current staff and inhabitants.
Anne’s hobbies include yoga, getting out into nature, craft gins and finding new ways to reduce the plastic and other environmentally damaging chemicals in her life.

Simone McPherson

Reiki Massage Therapist

Simone is passionate about holistic and complementary therapies and started volunteering at the Hospice in 2018. She finds it an honour to volunteer at BDCH and in her spare time enjoys yoga and meditation.
