#Throwback 2022 – Hospice Care Week

#Throwback 2022 #HospiceCareWeek2022

In our first blog of 2023, we take a look back at Hospice Care Week 2022.

We joined hospices around the country taking part in this annual awareness campaign by @HospiceUK to help shine a light on the amazing work that happens in caring for those with an incurable illness.

Everyone, no matter where they are, who they are or why they are ill, deserves quality care and support when they need it the most.

We took the opportunity during the week to introduce some new members of our care team and to share our work in providing day hospice care within our local community.

What we do and how we can help

Bedford Daycare Hospice is a small local independent charity providing care and support for adults living with a life-limiting illness in Bedford and Central Bedfordshire. We support patients and their families with a range of holistic services, providing access to nurse-led care, in partnership with other local health providers to enhance our patient’s overall health and wellbeing.

We work to ensure everyone affected by a life-limiting diagnosis, death and bereavement gets the care and support they need, when they need it.

 Access to our services

We have provided care and support to many hundreds of families in Bedfordshire since the Hospice was founded by former surgeon Donald Parsons and local businessman Clifton Ibbett in 1992.  The hospice is located in a quiet residential area in the centre of Bedford and services are provided by a small team of dedicated staff, volunteers and healthcare professionals.

We delivered our services throughout the Covid pandemic with a weekly telephone support service for our patients and launched a Covid-19 Counselling and Bereavement service open to everyone in need of support in our community in June 2020. We re-opened our vital patient services face-to-face as soon as it was safe to do so in May 2021, initially welcoming back small groups in line with government guidelines.  In June 2022, we celebrated our 30th anniversary, a year later than planned and showcased our new extension completed during lockdown.

Throughout this period, we were immensely grateful for all the fundraising efforts and support we received from the community which enabled us to continue to deliver our services and to our team of contractors who completed our Extend2020 project during an especially challenging period of lockdowns.

Information and Support

During Hospice Care Week 2022 we took the opportunity to introduce our nursing and volunteer support team, led by Natalie Braham and to share a video of the facilities and services on offer at Bedford Daycare Hospice. We know that dealing with end-of-life care can be hard for everyone involved. Our team is here to help give guidance, education and support to promote individual health and wellbeing.  We offer a daily programme, with stimulating activity sessions, chair-based exercises, education and relaxation sessions tailored to individual needs as well as providing our patients and their carers with the benefit of peer support and additional wellbeing services, outside of a clinal setting.
