Registered Nurse – Bedford Daycare Hospice | £14.05 per hour | 21 hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Bedford Daycare Hospice for a Registered Nurse with post registration experience ideally in the clinical care of patients with life-limiting conditions.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, committed, and motivated Registered Nurse to join our multi-disciplinary team. We offer care to patients with a wide range of life-limiting conditions including cancer and non-cancer. We have a well-staffed and motivated team who pride themselves on exceptional standards of care.

You will be a Registered Nurse who has gained experience ideally working within palliative care and will provide support for patients and their families, demonstrating excellent communication skills and being passionate about excellence in end of life care.

About us

Bedford Daycare Hospice aims to provide individualised holistic care to patients suffering from a life-limiting condition from the point of diagnosis through treatment to remission or palliative care.

We are well-established independent charity, celebrating our 30th Anniversary in 2022, working with other organisations providing care and support for patients with life-limiting illnesses in Bedford and Central Bedfordshire.

We are situated in a large Victorian house in the middle of Bedford close to the town centre, with free on-site parking.

Role Summary

Holistic assessment of patients with life-limiting conditions / complex health needs at initial assessment visit and at subsequent key trigger points during their admission period offering support as required and making referrals to other health and social care professionals as necessary.

· Ability to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care given.

· Encourage patient participation in chair-based exercises with a view to leading this following instruction.

· Participate in patient education programmes with a view to leading discussion groups.

· To assist patients in their basic care needs which include moving and handling, eating, drinking and toileting.

· Assistance with medication for those patients unable to self-medicate.

· Light housekeeping duties such as keeping the patient environment tidy, cleaning of equipment and some light laundry.

· Interaction with volunteers and the wider Bedford Daycare Hospice team.

· Participate in mandatory and in-house training, appraisal and performance review.

Essential criteria

Current registration on Part 1 of the NMC register. The post holder will be a first level registered nurse with a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree in Nursing or equivalent level of knowledge together with evidence of ongoing personal and professional development. Healthcare Assistant - Part time / Bank position, Bedford

As a Healthcare Assistant at Bedford Daycare Hospice, you’ll be spending time with a small group of patients, who visit us to enjoy a day of sociable activities with each other and our friendly team.

You’ll be helping with all aspects of their care – from serving meals and refreshments through to personal care, mobility, or even just having a chat. You’ll also be ready to engage with creative arts, word games, and lots more, so the ability to be dynamic and engaging with people from all walks of life is a must!

This is a special team that really makes a difference to the lives of those who come along, supporting them both emotionally and assisting with their physical care needs. We meet some really incredible people, and it’s a pleasure and a privilege to be with them on their journey.

An NVQ level 2 or equivalent experience in a care related field is desirable, but we’re mostly keen to find the right person for this role as full training will be provided.

Person Specification – Healthcare Assistant


The Healthcare Assistant will be experienced in a healthcare setting and have a knowledge of: –

The Healthcare Assistant will: –

  • Anticipate the needs of patients attending Bedford Daycare Hospice
  • Be able to deliver patient care under the supervision of the Registered Nurse
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to use their own initiative


The Healthcare Assistant will: –

  • Be able to work flexible shift patterns over the 5-day working week
  • Have a self-awareness of their own competencies and limitations
  • Be able to work as part of a team

Charity Fundraiser (External Vacancy, Your Hospice Lottery)

Full and part time positions available
Salary: £16,010 (FTE) plus commission
Location: North and Mid-Bedfordshire

Charity Fundraisers work for Your Hospice Lottery (owned and operated by St Helena Hospice) on behalf of Bedford Daycare Hospice to promote the work of the hospice and the lottery across North and Mid-Bedfordshire. We have both self-employed contracts and permanent positions available on either a full time or part time basis.
